The story
Gasthaus Zum Grünen Baum has built its reputation on traditional German cooking in Michelstadt since 1685. The property began as the first licensed inn located just beyond the medieval city gates. Women traditionally led the service and prepared meals in the back kitchen for over three centuries. The timber-framed structure remains largely unchanged since its founding.
Critics noted this dedication to provenance when granting the kitchen one and a half spoons in the latest Schlemmer Atlas. The menu draws directly from the estate’s own fields and hunting grounds. Plated servings feature wild boar, venison, pasture lamb, and river trout. Vegetarian selections follow the same seasonal calendar.
Exposed oak beams frame the main restaurant floor while stone archways mark older construction phases. Diners frequently choose the shaded beer garden when weather permits. The outdoor space separates casual tables from quieter corners near the garden wall. Seasonal wine flights and local craft beers complement the broader regional German cuisine experience.
