The story
In Emmerich, Altes Gasthaus Christ has served seasonal French-accented cuisine for eight generations under the Loose-Christ family. Norbert Loose assumed management in 1967 after his grandmother Luise Christ stepped back, now operating alongside his wife Christel and son Robert. Their stewardship preserves the building's original facade, allowing the structure to sit comfortably within the Emmerich streetscape near the Hüthumer Kirche and Georgsbrunnen. This continuity ensures the kitchen remains rooted in local tradition while adapting to modern tastes.
The kitchen focuses on regional ingredients presented through a lens of French culinary technique. Norbert Loose describes the kitchen ethos as regional and natural, infusing every plate with passion while shifting the menu according to the Rhineland harvest. Diners encounter a style that balances classic German foundations with subtle French influences rather than adhering to rigid boundaries. The approach yields a French-inspired gastronomy that honors seasonal availability across the region.
Guests settle into nostalgically appointed dining rooms designed for both intimate dinners and larger gatherings. The space accommodates everything from private business lunches to wedding receptions, maintaining a warm character throughout the years. An open counter area offers quick refreshments, while the adjacent garden provides an outdoor setting for cool drinks during warmer months. These distinct zones allow visitors to choose their preferred pace without losing the cohesive atmosphere of the historic Gasthaus.
