The story
Le 54 in Tongeren has built a steady following for its unpretentious Belgian cuisine since opening twenty-five years ago. Chef Ilse Motten and her partner Alain Danneels originally ran a different venue for three years before establishing this location for a decade and a half. Their commitment to honest flavors secured a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2020 and a Gault Millau prize for the best value restaurant in Flanders. The kitchen still operates with that same focus on accessible pricing paired with careful preparation.
The choice to abandon the evening menu emerged gradually as the founders recognized that long dinner shifts no longer suited their pace. A sudden closure during the pandemic pushed them toward catering work, which ultimately revealed how much they preferred shorter, more manageable days. The Belgian kitchen now operates exclusively for the midday crowd, closing the evening service permanently. Patrons arrive at tables set for a relaxed Tuesday through Sunday schedule that avoids the usual dinner rush fatigue.
Alain Danneels manages the floor personally, taking reservations through direct telephone calls instead of third-party booking engines. The main hall maintains a comfortable capacity that keeps background noise low enough for easy conversation. Plates move steadily between the twelve o clock start and the four o clock finish. This Flemish cooking thrives on predictable quality rather than experimental presentations.
